He was born into a Jewish family in Prague. His father was a businessman while his mother was a woman of senior Czech bourgeoisie. He lived a carefree childhood.〔El Mercurio (Santiago), 26 October 1997, p.D17〕 At age 17, in the middle of systematic harassment suffered as a result of Nazi policies, he was subjected to forced labour and various humiliations.
